In the 1500s, a Spanish conquistador on an exploratory visit in Brazil found a green tourmaline crystal and thought it was an Emerald. However his belief was crushed when the scientists in the 1800s acknowledged that the Tourmaline possessed different mineral species. The name ‘Tourmaline’ comes from the Sinhalese* word toramalli meaning ‘mixed gems’.  (*A Sri Lankan language) 

Tourmaline is a semi-precious stone, and it's most famous place of produce in ancient times used to be Sri Lanka.
