Lord Ganesha is known as Vinayak., Ashta means eight. Ashtavinayak mean the Eight different forms of idols of Vinayakji wich are located in Eight different locations in the Pune district of Maharashtra state in India. The Ashtavinayak darshan (visiting the temples to see the Lord ) is considered an auspicious pilgrimage.

These Eight Ganeshas are Moreshwar, Siddhivinayak, Ballaleshwar, Varadavinayak, Chintamani, Mahaganapati, Vighnahar, Girijatmaj.

This Ashtavinayak ensemble in a wooden frame gives the devotees to see the Ashtavinayak and receive His blessings at home. On the left side is an image of Lord Ganesha from metal sheet. On the right side are the Ashtavinayak murtis (idols), etched on metal sheet which is a replica of the original idols at the Ashta Vinayak temples. Each of the images can be seen on individual windows with the name of that particular Vinayakji idol, written in Hindi below it.

The wooden frame is stylish and is in dark brown colour.

The Ashtavinayak idols in the different temples have their own significance and have their own history and legend. The Eight Vinayak murtis (idols) are:

  • Mayureshwar/ Moreshwar: The name Mayureshwar arises from the legend that Vinayak rode a peacock mount in a battle against evil demons. The name Moresh or Moregaon was given to this place, where the temple of this Vinayak idol is situated, as this region once served as the habitat of the peacocks.
  • Siddhivinayak: Ganesha is enshrined in a seated posture with his consorts Siddhi and Riddhi.
  • Ballaleshwar: Legend has it that Lord Ganesha had saved his devotee Ballal when he was beaten up by his father and villagers for praying to the Lord and took up abode permanently at Pali with the name Ballal Vinayak.
  • Varadavinayak:It is said that once a Rishi’s wife, Mukundaa had an illegitimate child, When The Gritshmadha cam to know of this fact, he cursed his mother and she cursed him in return. Gritshmadha later prayed to Ganesha in Bhadrakavana to absolve him of the sins. His prayers were granted by Varadavinayak of Bhadrakavana.
  • Chintamani: Sage Kapila possessed of a gem Chintaamani, capable of granting one’s desires. He once created a sumptuous meal for the prince Guna with the help of the gem. The prince enamored by the power of the gem, stole it from the sage. Kapila Muni prayed to Vinayaka who restored the gem from the prince; however the sage refused to accept it, and began to revered Vinayaka as Chintaamani Vinayaka.
  • Girijatmaj: The legend surrounding Ganesha’s birth speaks of Parvati creating a young lad from the dirt of her body. Parvati wanted this lad as an infant. Ganesha reincarnated himself as an infant and lived in the Lenayadri hills for 12 years.
  • Vighnahar: Legend has it that Ganesha vanquished a demon Vignaasura who posed problems to all inhabitants. The demon later surrendered requesting Ganesha to take up the name Vigneshwar.
  • Mahaganapati: According to a legend a demon Hripurasura built three powerful citadels with a boon of invincibility granted to him by Shiva and caused suffering to all beings in the heavens and on earth. Later Ganesha shot a single arrow that pierced through the citadels, bringing an end to the demon. Ashta Vinayak with Shree Ganesh yantra at the centre.
