Whole Black Urad or Black Gram is widely used in Vedic Puja rituals and Hawan. Whole Black Urad is offered to appease planet Shani or Saturn, as per Vedic Astrology. The malefic effects of Shani can cause financial, mental, relationship problems and other struggles. Offering whole Black Urad Dal to Shani Dev helps to get relief from ill effects of unfavourable placement of planet Shani, when reflected in the Birth chart and aids in receiving the positive blessings of Shani Dev. Donating Black Gram to the needy on Saturdays is a common practice to please planet Saturn. Mythology says that Lord Shani had promised Lord Hanuman that His devotees would be protected from planet Shani\'s negative effects. So, whole Black Urad is mixed with Oil and offered to Lord Hanuman on Saturdays, by natives who are going through Shani Sade Sati or for other Shani Doshas.
