Dhanvantari Puja and Yajna/Homam is performed for good health, healing diseases and ailments, wealth and success through the invocation of Lord Dhanvantari who is a celestial Healer.
The primary deity of this Puja and Yagna is Lord Dhanvantari, who is a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, one of the Divine Trinity, the preserver and protector of the Universe. Lord Dhanvantari is the father of Ayurveda, who appeared on the day of Dhanteras carrying a pot of Amrit (nectar) in His hand, from the Celestial Milky Ocean, at the end of Samudra Manthan. He is the Physician of Gods, a Healer/doctor of the Universe. As per the Puranas the legendary Samudra Manthan (churning of the Celestial Ocean) was conducted by the Gods and Asuras for the Amrit, the nectar of immortality. Dhanvantri Puja & Yajna is performed on Dhanvantari Trayodashi which is celebrated two days before Diwali Puja during Trayodashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha. It marks the appearance of Lord Vishnu in His divine incarnation of Lord Dhanvantari, the teacher and the father of Ayurveda. Lord Dhanvantari is worshipped and invoked for healing diseases and ailments, including chronic or fatal diseases, for getting relief from frequent ill health, prosperity, wealth, success. As Lord Dhanvantari was the carrier of Amrit, He blesses devotees with longevity. Dhanvantari Puja benefits medical practitioners, paramedics like nurses etc., and those in alternate healing professions.
The Samudra Manthan or churning of Cosmic Milk Ocean is related to the Srimad Bhagavatam and is one of the most famous Chapter of this great book. Lord Dhanvantari first appeared during the great churning of the cosmic milk ocean to deliver amrita (nectar) for the nourishment and immortality of the demigods. The churning of the milk ocean is one of the most famous episodes in Puranic history and is celebrated in a major way every twelve years in the festival known as Kumbha Mela.
