Narayana Naga bali Puja is one of the ancient and most effective and potent pujas performed to liberate the stuck spirits of family members who died an untimely death or died in an unfortunate way known as ‘Dur-maran’. Following are a few references of unnatural Deaths known as Durmaran and in such cases, it is highly recommended to perform the Narayan Nagbali Pooja in Trimbakeshwar
The word Narayan refers to Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped and prayed upon while performing the rituals of this Puja. The word Nagbali is made by co-joining two words namely ‘Nag’ meaning Snake and ‘Bali’ meaning ritualistic or Holy sacrifice. The time duration of performing the Narayan Nagbali puja is of three days. Narayan Bali is a form of offering Bali (sacrifice) for peace of Atma(soul) and involves worship to Supreme Lord Shree Vishnu. The main motive behind these rites is to help the Atma - soul to liberate and transcend, attain Mukti – Moksha.
Second is Nag bali, performed to get rid of sin of killing snake, especially Cobra which is worshipped in India. Detailed description of Narayana Bali puja is described in 40th chapter of the Garuda Purana which is one of the most sacred texts of Sanatan Dharma which describe the cycle of life and death. It says the soul revolves around until the family performs these rites which are also known as pinda pradana.
This puja is for deceased family members whose funeral rites Shraddha Karmas were not performed and/or who were deprived of regular annual ceremonies or for those who had an untimely or accidental death. This elaborate puja includes prayers for 7 generations of deceased ancestors from Father’s side and seven generations of deceased ancestors from Mother ‘s side and, if married, from wife’s maternal side. It is performed once in a lifetime. This is a 3 day puja performed only in Trimbakeshwar.
The Narayan Bali rites are similar to those of a Hindu cremation, although they are reduced to three days rather than the usual thirteen. If the post-death rites of the one who has had an unnatural death has not been done ritualistically, it continues to remain in the corpse state. Then the subtle-body does not gain momentum and consequently it keeps wandering. Such a subtle-body prevents procreation in its descendants and also torments them in some way or the other. To provide momentum to such a subtle-body, the rite of Narayanbali should be performed. During this ritual, a dummy body composed mostly of wheat dough is employed and vedic mantras are sung to summon the lost spirit in it. Then it is set ablaze with the pyre, allowing the soul to free and transcend.
The Nag Bali ceremony involves making a dummy snake body of wheat dough and using mantras the fears, desires and dark energies of the deceased are pulled inside it and then it is sacrificed. This funeral liberates the spirit of these dark forces and pushes it to the other world.
The ancient Scripture, Dharma Sindhu states the significance of the Holy land of Trimbakeshwar and clearly mentions that that the religious rites and rituals for pacifying the souls of the departed must be performed only at Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple. The Skanda Purana and Padma Purana also corroborate the same. The Trimbakeshwar Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. This temple is renowned for the three faced Shivlingam which represents Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Mahesha (Shiva). The temple also comprises of other deities like Gangadevi, Jaleswara, Rameswara, Gautameswara, Kedarnatha, Rama, Krishna, Parasurama and Lakshmi Narayana. Due to the divine presence of the Trinity and all other deities the whole temple pulsates with the Supreme energies. The temple also has monasteries of saints and a well-known as ‘Amritavarshini’. There is a sacred pond near the Trimbakeshwar temple called as Kushavarta where certain rituals of Shradh Puja are performed.
