Purpose of Navagraha Pooja Vidhanam or Navagraha Shanti puja

Prayers to the Navagraha are performed to invoke the blessings of the nine planets, each of which holds significant astrological importance and influence various aspects of our lives including health, wealth, relationships, and destiny by their respective positions and movements in our astrological charts. This pooja is said to remove obstacles, balance planetary influences, and bring prosperity, health, and harmony.    

As per Indian Vedic Astrology, it is said that planetary placements in the horoscope form the yogas and the doshas (negative influences). It is due to these "Navagraha doshas," one faces obstacles and hindrances in life. Yogas on other hand are beneficial planetary combinations that are said to bring prosperity, career success, good health, harmonious relationships, and spiritual growth. By getting a puja done by well-versed pundits, one can pacify doshas and reap the benefits of yogas through precise mantras, rituals, offerings, and Vedic chants that appease the planets.   

Navagraha Puja is done on a special day (muhurat) which is derived in accordance with the horoscope of the native for whom it is to be performed in order to get the maximum benefits.   

In the Navagraha puja, the chanting of mantras for the nine planets—Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Mercury, Rahu, and Ketu is done for pacifying each planet and to appease the Navagrahas to seek their favor. Homa is performed with the offering of specific herbs, ghee, grains, and other sacred materials into the fire, accompanied by Vedic chants. The sacred fire acts as a medium to transmit the offerings to the deities, invoking their blessings and reducing the malefic effects of the planets. This ritual also involves donation of grains specific to each graha to the poor and needy. This process, known as Graha Shanti and is said to harmonize planetary influences, bringing peace, prosperity, and well-being to the individual.   

Describing the significance of worshipping Navagrahas (nine planets), Lord Vishnu told Rudra -'One who worships the Navagraha with appropriate rituals attains all the four purusharth (objectives of man's life):- dharma (religion), artha (materialistic abundance), kaam (fulfillment of desires) and moksha (salvation)'.
