In Dharma, the Shodashopachar Puja is one of the best yet simple methods to worship the Divine. It is one of the most popular forms of Puja conducted in homes and in temples. Any God and Goddess may be worshiped using the Shodashopachar Puja. During this Puja, the presiding Deity of the Puja is invoked and worshipped using sixteen steps. These sixteen steps come after performing Achamanam, Sankalp, Kalasha Puja, Guru Dhyanam, Parabrahma Dhyanam and some other such rituals. The Shodashopachar Puja is derived directly from the Karmakand of the Vedas. The Puja involves offering of 16 items along with chanting of Mantras. With Shodashopachar Puja and God or Goddess can be honored, revered and worshipped and their Divine grace and blessings can be sought. The sixteen steps involved in the Shodashopachar Puja are:
Shodashopachara Puja is a Vedic ritual to worship any God or Goddess. It involves sixteen ritual steps that invoke the deity and honor and revere Him as a guest and seek His blessings. It aims at raising your five senses, removing all the negative energies from your mind and body and bringing you in tune with the deity.
The steps are as below and each is performed with a Vedic mantra and offering:
Dhyaana - Meditating on the Deity
Aavaahana - Inviting the Deity to the place (altar) of worship
Aasana - Offering the Deity a seat
Paadya - Washing the Deity’s feet with holy water
Arghya - Offering the Deity water to rinse hands and mouth
Aachamana - Offering the Deity water to drink
Snaana - Bathing the Deity with various holy items
Vastra - Dressing the Deity
Yagnopaveetha - Offering the Deity a clean sacred thread
Gandha - Applying fresh sandalwood paste on the Deity
Pushpa - Offering fresh flowers
Dhoopa - Spreading incense smoke throughout the altar
Deepa - Lighting up an oil/ghee lamp
Naivedya - Offering the Deity food
Taambula - Offering the Deity mix of betel nut and leaves
Pradakshina & Namaskara - Circumambulating the altar and bidding farewell to the Deity
