The Skanda Purana mentions that the Narmada River (also called Rewa) sprung from the body of Lord Shiva, and the name Narmada was also given by Lord Shiva, a reason for which Narmada is also known as Lord Shiva's daughter. Therefore the river is also called Shankari. The Narmada river is considered so sacred that you don't require to take a dip in it; just seeing the River is equivalent to taking a dip in the holy river Ganga.
The Narmadeshwar Shiva Lingam is composed of Cryptocrystalline Quartz, Agate, Basalt Chalcedony, Iron Oxide of Meteoric origin and Goethite and compared to other stones on Earth, it possesses the highest vibration. The stone is high on hardness, measuring 7 on Mohs scale. It is believed that a Meteorite exploded and fell on the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, which gives it the Mineralogical composition it has. Generally, the sacred Shivling found in Narmada River is Brown, Beige, dark brown in colour with red markings, which is said to be caused by Meteorite minerals. The Red markings denote Lord Shiva's female counterpart, Devi Shakti. So the fascinating Narmada Lingam is the embodiment of Shiva and Shakti.
