About Chandi Mata | Significance of Chandi Puja & Havan

Goddess Chandi is one of the fierce and powerful manifestations of the feminine energy. She is highly revered in Hinduism and is known as the Goddess who fought and killed many evil demons who tried to create imbalance in the world through their evil activities. The word ‘Chandi’ is derived from a Sanskrit word ‘Chand’ which literally translates to ‘Tear Apart’. Thus, Maa Chandi is the one who tears apart the thoughts that feed the ego. She destroys the thoughts that take diverts us of our path. Being a divine form of Shakti, Maa Chandi is also referred to as the ‘Supreme Brahman’ (the ultimate truth and reality) in Srimad Devi Bhagavatam. Maa Chandi is a primordial Supreme energy that is responsible for maintaining the cycle of creation, preservation, and destruction.
Goddess Chandi or Chandika is the powerful terrifying form of Goddess Shakti or Maa Durga. She was created as the combined power of the Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Goddess Chandi is portrayed with many hands,10 or even 18 hands sometimes, which represent Her destructive power, the power to slay all Demons.
The Chandi Homam or Chandi Yagam is a fire sacrifice dedicated to invoking the fiercely powerful Maa Chandi and to appease Her. She is the primordial Divine Mother who looks after the Universe and everyone. In the process of performing the Chandi Homa puja devotees seek Goddess Chandi's divine blessings. She is the embodiment of the divine ‘Tridevi’ namely Maa Parvati, Maa Saraswati and Maa Lakshmi. In the eastern part of the country especially in the Bengal, Maa Chandi is highly revered as Goddess Chandika. Whereas, in the Southern parts of the country, She is addressed as Chandi Chamundi. The Devi Mahatmya of the Markandeya Purana glorifies the Goddess Chandi and Her victory over evil by mentioning Her name twenty-nine times. There are 700 verses glorifying Maa Chandi in Saptashata or the Chandi Path. Maa Chandi is described as having a black or red complexion. She wears ‘mundamala’ (the garland of severed head skulls). She has twelve arms in which She holds a damaru, trishula, sword, a snake, khatvanga- skull-mace, thunderbolt, a severed head, kapala-the skull cup and panapatra, the drinking vessel. Maa Chandi is portrayed standing on corpse or is described as being seated on lion.

What is Samputith Chandi Homa? Difference between Samputith Chandi Homa & Regular Chandi Homa?

The word ‘Samputit’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Samput’ which means a ‘covering’ or a shield that has the power to bring together the divine energy in order to get immediate effects. A Samput is chanted or recited before and after every mantra or a path to enhance its power and offer quick results. It is like a capsule that holds together the medicine powder inside it safely. Samput can be in the form of mantra or a chaupai (quatrain verses). A Samputith Chandi Homa comprises of Vedic rituals where a specific mantra or path is recited before and after every path or mantra to increase the power and divinity of the Yagna or Homa. A Samputit Path may vary depending upon the sankalp stated by the Yajman to perform the Chandi puja. Depending upon the sankalp, a Samputith Mantra or path is recited. The Yagna that is performed with Samputith Path is known to generate enormous divine energy and holds a great value as it is known to awaken the Supreme Devi and helps in attaining Her consent to fulfil the wishes of the Yajman. A Samputith Yagna enhances the auspiciousness of the entire puja ritual and is known to be one of the purest and powerful forms of devotion which is performed with modesty and pure admiration to appease the Goddess.

The difference between a Regular Chandi Homa and a Samputith Chandi Homa is that, in a regular Chandi Homa, normal mantra chanting is performed in a continual manner and all the other rituals are performed according to Vedic methods. Whereas, in a Samputith Chandi Homa, after every verse, mantra or chapter a specific mantra or path is recited depending upon the Sankalp or reason to perform the Homa. A Samputith Chandi Homa helps to gather all the power and divine energy of the path or mantra in one place an amplifies the energy and offer quick solution.
