Goddess Chandi, also known as Chandika or Chandi Chamundi, is a fierce and protective form of Divine Shakti. She represents the combined cosmic energy of Maa Durga, Maa Lakshmi, and Maa Saraswati, also known as the Tridevi. The name "Chandi" comes from the Sanskrit root ‘Chand’, meaning “to tear apart”—symbolizing Her divine power to annihilate evil and ego-driven tendencies.
As described in the Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmya), Goddess Chandi was born from the collective radiance of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh to defeat powerful demons like Mahishasura, Shumbha, and Nishumbha. She is often portrayed with multiple arms, riding a lion, and holding divine weapons—manifesting the supreme might of the Divine Mother.
The Chandi Homam or Maha Chandi Yagam is one of the most potent rituals in the Vedic tradition. It is performed to invoke Maa Chandi’s blessings for removal of negativity, protection from enemies, and victory over obstacles. This sacred fire ritual is particularly powerful when performed on Amavasya, Navratri, Ashtami, or during spiritually potent nights.
Chandi Homam performed during the night is especially powerful due to the unique cosmic energies that are active at that time. Many sacred scriptures and traditions prescribe night rituals for fierce and transformative deities like Maa Chandi. Here's why:

The word ‘Samputit’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Samput’ which means a ‘covering’ or a shield that has the power to bring together the divine energy in order to get immediate effects. A Samput is chanted or recited before and after every mantra or a path to enhance its power and offer quick results. It is like a capsule that holds together the medicine powder inside it safely. Samput can be in the form of mantra or a chaupai (quatrain verses). A Samputith Chandi Homa comprises of Vedic rituals where a specific mantra or path is recited before and after every path or mantra to increase the power and divinity of the Yagna or Homa. A Samputit Path may vary depending upon the sankalp stated by the Yajman to perform the Chandi puja. Depending upon the sankalp, a Samputith Mantra or path is recited. The Yagna that is performed with Samputith Path is known to generate enormous divine energy and holds a great value as it is known to awaken the Supreme Devi and helps in attaining Her consent to fulfil the wishes of the Yajman. A Samputith Yagna enhances the auspiciousness of the entire puja ritual and is known to be one of the purest and powerful forms of devotion which is performed with modesty and pure admiration to appease the Goddess.
The difference between a Regular Chandi Homa and a Samputith Chandi Homa is that, in a regular Chandi Homa, normal mantra chanting is performed in a continual manner and all the other rituals are performed according to Vedic methods. Whereas, in a Samputith Chandi Homa, after every verse, mantra or chapter a specific mantra or path is recited depending upon the Sankalp or reason to perform the Homa. A Samputith Chandi Homa helps to gather all the power and divine energy of the path or mantra in one place an amplifies the energy and offer quick solution.
