The Garuda Purana is one of the most important texts in Hinduism. It is one of the 18 Mahapurana texts which revolves around Lord Vishnu and which is a part of the Vaishnav literature. The earliest version of the Garuda Purana is believed to have been composed as early as the first millennium BCE but this text was changed and expanded furthermore. The expansion and changes that were being made prolonged for a long period of time. The Garuda Purana comprises of texts which impart knowledge about the cosmos, history of Gods and Goddesses, relationship between gods, Good versus evil, Theory of Yoga, Ethical living, different schools of Hindu philosophies. This divine text also mentions about the types of minerals, various diseases, gemstones and their testing methods, list of herbs and plants. The Garudra Purana also mentions the essential features of a Hindu temple, rites of passage, charity, self-knowledge, afterlife & death.
Garuda Purana text is in the form of instructions by Lord Vishnu to Sri Garuda wherein Lord Vishnu discloses the meaning of Life and details of Life after death. It is a Vaishnava Purana having 19,000 Shlokas that are further divided into two subsections, Purva Khanda (first part) and Uttara Khanda (second part) respectively. The second half of this Purana deals with the subject "Life after Death". It describes the path of a soul after death, mentions Sadgati (Correct Path) and how to get Moksha.
As per the rituals, the Garud Puran ki Katha or Garud Puran Path after the death of an individual between the 4th day of death till the 11th day in the evening time. Garud Path is done in the presence of close family members of the departed soul.
The Garuda Purana is written by Maharishi Ved Vyasa. He was a noted Sage and is famously known to have written the great Indian Epic, Mahabharata, Vedas, Puranas and was the one who classified the Vedas.
The second half of the Garuda Purana narrates what happens after the soul leaves the body after death. Anyone who is born will die and that is a stark truth of life. Through this Katha, Lord Vishnu has revealed to His devoted Vahan (vehicle), Garuda, what happens to the soul exactly after it exits the body. There is an explicit explanation of the fierce-looking Yamdoots who come to tie the soul and drag the soul away, then the soul is reminded of the sins he/she committed in their lifetime. Garud Puran ki Katha also mentions about the location of Yamlok (hell). It talks about 24 types of punishment for different types of sins and it also mentions the encounter of the soul with God Yama (God of death).
The souls with too many bad Karmas (deeds) goes through a terrible time going from one hell to another. The underlying philosophy of life after death is to make us aware that since death is inevitable, be prepared for it. It also educates us on how we should be living a life being aware of our deeds, Karmas. We will need to pay for every bad Karma and sin we commit here on earth. So, Karma and Dharma in one's lifetime are significant in deciding the soul's path after death. And ultimately it also teaches us not to be too attached to anyone or anything.
