Out of the 16 Samskaras, the Antima samskara is the last but one of the most important samskara to perform. Shraadh rituals and Pujas are performed till the 13th day from the day a family member passes away. As per the Garud Purana, the soul starts its journey and the Shraadh rituals done help the soul with nourishment and assistance in its journey. Everyday Shraddh Puja is done to aid the journey of the soul from Bhu-loka to Pret-loka to Pitr-loka Shraadh Puja is done. Pindas (rice balls) are offered to provide nourishment for the further journey soul to the next world and daan dakshina is done to Brahmins and their blessings are sought. After a family member passes away the next 10 days, known as Das Karmas are considered significant for mourning and various rites. During this time no food is cooked in the house, mourners sleep on ground with no entertainment and minimum luxury and perform various rituals. Recitation of Garud Purana, Bhagavad Gita and Vishnu Sahasranamam is recommended for atma shanti (peace of the soul). The significance of Shraadh Puja is mentioned in many ancient Vedic texts including the Garud Puran, it is believed that souls of the ancestors for whom Shraddh rituals are performed attain peace and thus they in turn bless their coming generations. The rituals are beneficial for peace, prosperity and purification purposes. As per scriptures with these rituals the sorrows go away and a new beginning is ushered both for the deceased and the family members.
All the below mentioned Shraadh Rituals are undertaken by learned Mahapatra Brahmins only:
Daily Shraadh Puja (4th day onwards): Daily Shraddh Puja includes Pind daan, Tarpan, recitation of Garuda Purana and other antyeshti kriyas. Shraddh Puja helps the soul of the deceased be in peace and carryon their onward journey. The rituals are performed not only to remember and respect the loved one but also to help them in their onward journey towards moksha or re-birth.
Daily Puja services include: Sankalp, Ganesh pujan, Navgraha pujan with 108 chants of each planetary mantra, Shodashopachara (16 step) pujan, Maha Vishnu pujan, Panchdevta pujan, Pind daan, Tarpan, Shraadh Puja, Daily Garuda Puran recitation for 8 days, Donation to Brahmins, Feeding to Cows, Dogs, Crows & Poor (Panchgras)
Chautha (4th day): Chautha is performed on the fourth day. On this day the deceased is remembered and prayers are offered for the soul of the deceased.
Puja services Include: Shraadh Puja, Shanti paath and Geeta pravachan.
Shraadh Puja with Shaiya Daan (7th day): On the 7th day along with the Shraadh Puja, Shaiya Daan is also done. Shaiya Daan means donation of all essential articles used by the deceased person to a Brahmin. This includes articles such as bed, bedding, umbrella, lantern, food items, clothes, vessels, offerings (kapaas, salt, barley, til, udeed, kangini, gold, silver) along with brahmin bhojan. Depending upon one’s own financial capacity Shaiya Daan is done to a Brahmin, pleased who then blesses the family and the soul of the deceased.

Panchagavya Homa/Shuddhikaran (11th day): Panchagavya Homa is considered one of the most auspicious Homas for peace and prosperity. Panch means five and Gavya means derivations of Cow. Thus Panchagavya is a mixture of five ingredients which are obtained from a cow, the ingredients being cow-milk, cow-curd, cow-ghee, cow-urine and cow-dung. These rituals help the deceased to attain a peaceful transmigration of the soul and tide over the difficult times for the family members left behind.

Sapinidikarana Shraadh (12th day): Sapinidikarana Shraadh rituals are done on the 12th day after passing away of a near or dear one. The ritual symbolizes acceptance of the deceased person’s soul as a Pitr or forefather and entry in the Pitrlok. Sapinidikarana literally means coming-together or grouping-together. As per Garud Puran on the 12th day the subtle body which is also called Preta-body enters the world of ancestors and is accepted as a pitr, the ritual helps the soul make the transition with peace and ease.
Puja services include: Agnaukaraṇa rituals, Shraadh puja, rituals with water and kusha glass along with mantra chanting to complete the process of merging of Pitras, Brahmin bhoj
Teravi Puja (13th day): As per the Garuda Purana, the Teravi ceremony and Puja is done on the 13 days from the day the period of mourning starts. This day marks the completion of the soul’s journey from Bhu-loka to Pret-loka to Pitra-loka. The day and the rituals on the day symbolize the end of the mourning period. The day symbolizes cutting-off of all ties of the soul with the earthly life he or she has lived. On the day all the near and dear ones and Brahmins are invited and fed a meal of simple satvik food along with sweets. After Puja, Pind daan and isolation for 13 days, the family members return to their normal lives with a havan for the peace of the departed soul.
