The Brahma Purana states that Gudi Padwa is the day on which Lord Brahma created the universe and the Satyuga began. The day of Gudi Padwa is celebrated all cross India and the world with some variations. It is celebrated as a new year in the Indian states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. In Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh the day is celebrated as Ugadi. The day of Gudi Padwa is considered as very auspicious to start new ventures or to buy new possessions such as a house, car, gold and more. On the day homes are decorated with rangolis and torans. On the day of Gudi Padwa, a Gudi is hosted in front of every house, which is also known as 'Brahmadhvaj' or the flag of Lord Brahma. The Gudi which is also a symbol of victory is made using a decorated bamboo stick with an inverted copper pot with swastika symbol on it, the Gudi is decorated with silk cloth, mango and neem leaves, marigold flowers and coconut.
