Purpose of Maa Chamunda Puja

Maa Chamunda is depicted as a fearsome and powerful goddess, embodying both destructive and protective aspects. She emerged as a fierce form of the goddess Durga during a battle against the demon kings Chanda and Munda. In this battle, she defeated them, earning the name Chamunda. She is known by many names such as Chamundi, Charchika, Chamundeshwari and more. Glories of Maa Chamunda are mentioned in scriptures such as Mahabharata, Devi Purana, Vishnudharmottara Purana and more. She is one of the seven Matrikas (seven Goddesses) and Chausat Yoginis (64 Yoginis). All other six Goddesses of the seven Matrikas are considered as Shakti or Power of their male consorts and only Maa Chamunda is considered as Shakti of Goddess Devi (Shakti) Herself. Thus she is worshipped as the leader of the seven Matrikas. Maa Chamunda is worshipped for protection, victory over enemies, success and also occult powers. It is believed that the Puja and mantra Japa of Maa Chamunda Devi is stringent and should only be conducted by experienced priests.
