Raksha Bandhan or 'Rakhi' celebrates the unique bond of love between a brother and a sister, according to legends Demon King Bali defeated the Gods and was planning 100 Aswamedha Yagnas to be crowned as the King of the Gods. To stop him from becoming invincible, Lord Vishnu took his Vaman (Drawf) Avatar (5th Avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu) and asked King Bali for 3 steps of land as alms (in Daan). Demon King Bali who himself was a devotee of Lord Vishnu and had recognized Lord Vishnu and agreed to Him. The Vaman Avatar measured the entire Land and Skies (Brahmand) in his two steps and asked Demon King Bali where he should keep his third step on which King Bali offered his head. The Vaman keeps his third step on King Bali's head and pushed him to the underworld (Pataalloka).
Pleased with Demon King Bali's righteousness Lord Vishnu offered King Bali a boon to which King Bali requests Lord Vishnu to see Him wherever he looks in his palace. Lord Vishnu became the Dwaarpal (gatekeeper) of King Bali's palace in the Pataalloka as the palace had 52 doors. As Lord Vishnu was missing from Vaikunth, Narad informed Goddesses Laxmi about the happenings, Goddesses Laxmi in the disguise of a Brahmani (Brahmin woman) goes to Pataalloka and ask for refuge from King Bali and ties a sacred thread on the King Bali's arm and explains to King Bali that She is now his sister and will pray for his wellbeing and longevity of life and in return takes promise from King Bali to protect her and offer her a gift to which King Bali agrees. Goddesses Laxmi then tells who she was and request King Bali to let her take Lord Vishnu to Vaikunth as a gift to which King Bali agrees. Thus begun the tradition of Raksha Bandhan, on this day sister tie a sacred thread on their brother's arm and wish for their wellbeing and prosperity and in return Brother's promise to protect their sisters and offer a gift.
